Newsgroup access overview
This website is a project of the newsgroup alt.support.thyroid. You're welcome to just spend time at this site or to read and join in newsgroup discussions.
Newsgroups can be accessed two ways:
- Via a newsreader (for example, Outlook Express or Netscape) and a news server
- Via a website that provides newsgroup access
See also our Posting Guidelines.
Websites with newsgroup access
- To post, an account is required, but account sign-up is free.
- It can take several hours for posts to appear at the Google site although they usually appear almost right away with other newsreaders.
- Google archives newsgroup posts, so you can search the newsgroup archives from this site.
- You need to use a valid email address, which will appear with your posts.
Newsreaders
Using newsreaders
- Most computers have newsreaders, also called news clients, with their email programs. Look up "newsreader" or "newsgroups" under Help in Outlook Express or Netscape for details. For more information, see "To use newsreaders" in the column at the right.
- If you are already subscribed to newsgroups, this news:alt.support.thyroid link will take you to alt.support.thyroid.
- For detailed instructions on how to respond to posts, reply to posters, and start new threads, see Find Us at the previous alt.support.thyroid site.
News servers
- You can access newsgroups via your newsreader if your ISP (Internet Service Provider) provides newsgroup access via news servers. If you don't see a list of newsgroups to subscribe to after setting up your newsreader for newsgroups (see above), contact your ISP.
- If your ISP doesn't provide newsgroup access, you can use free or commercial newsgroup providers.
- This site has a searchable database of free, public news servers.
- If your computer already has a newsreader program, you can click on a server link and the newsgroup will appear via your newsreader.
- Some servers allow read-only access while others also allow users to post to newsgroups.
- It's free to use, but an account is required, which costs a one-time setup fee of $3.95 US.
- You can read the posts via a browser-based news client (e.g., Outlook Express, Netscape) or the ones listed on their News Reader Clients page.
- Formerly free, this is now an inexpensive newsgroup service from Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.
- You need to use a valid email address (yours or their default one) when posting.
- Once registered, you can access this news server via any newsreader program.
Posts delivered to your in-box
- This option is read-only.
- Subscription is free.
- Posts are delivered to your usual email address or to one just for this purpose.
- You can also read recent posts online here.

To no-archive posts
Google.com automatically archives usenet/newsgroup posts. If you don't want your posts archived, include "X-No-archive: yes" (without the quotation marks) in the header or in the first line of the body of the message. Note that the characters must be exactly as specified.
To avoid spam
Email address harvesters collect email addresses from newsgroups for spammers. If you use a real email address when you post, you will be sent spam and possibly viruses. Two common ways around this:
• Spam-block your address by adding an extra word or letter. People who do this sometimes provide instructions in their message footers on how to unblock their email addresses.
• Use an email address other than your usual one for newsgroups, such as a Yahoo or Hotmail email address.
To email posters
Many posters have spam-blocked or disguised email addresses. Some blocks are easy to remove, or the posters provide instructions on how to email them in their posts. Posters who prefer not to be contacted by email usually post with clearly fake email addresses.
