A. Medical clinics and organizations

1. Broda O. Barnes, M.D. Research Foundation, Inc.: "Who We Are"

Patients taking thyroid replacement therapy have much better improvement of symptoms with natural desiccated thyroid hormone rather than synthetic thyroid hormones.

Online at <www.brodabarnes.org/who_we_are.htm> (accessed 2003/09/10).

2. Mary Medical Clinic: "Thyroid Dysfunction"

Many physicians will tell you that Armour is not regulated, and this is still quite confusing to us as it bears the USP seal and can be found in the Physician's Desk Reference (PDR). They can say what they want, but many thousands of patients have found great relief in replacement therapy with Armour, and a large percentage of those presented while on Synthroid.

Online at <www.maryclinic.com/thyroid.html> (accessed 2003/09/10).

B. Medical writers

Mary J. Shomon, author of Living Well With Autoimmune Disease (2002) and Living Well With Hypothyroidism (2000), and About.com Guide to Thyroid Disease: "Worst Pills, Best Pills Warns Against Using Armour Thyroid"

...if you ask the hundreds of thousands of patients who switched from synthetic thyroxine to Armour Thyroid and find it the optimal thyroid drug for them — along with the doctors who prescribed the Armour for them — they can provide volumes of "evidence" of superiority in terms of quality of life and improved health....

There is no evidence that synthetic thyroxine has any advantage over desiccated thyroid.

Online at <www.thyroid.about.com/library/weekly/aaworstpills.htm> (accessed 2003/09/10).

C. Other

1. Breast Iodine Thyroid Effectiveness Society (BITES): "Hypothyroidism"

...although pharmaceutical companies have told doctors for years that synthetic T4 is superior to natural, desiccated thyroid containing more of the thyroid hormones, many patients don't start to feel normal again until they switch from synthetic to natural thyroid hormone.

Natural, desiccated thyroid hormone replacement has been used since the late 1800s, and it is one of the safest drugs available.

Last online in January 2005.

2. A compilation of patients' experiences with the use of desiccated thyroid

  • BG: t3/t4 absolutely may be necessary, even if your blood tests are normal. Mine were normal and I watched my afternoon fatigue and sinus problems magically vanish when I started on Armour Thyroid.

    Online at <www.altsupportthyroid.org/dt/dtexp1pr.php> (accessed 2003/09/10).
  • Theresa: I was on Synthroid before....It is so nice to not feel like I am crazy anymore. The Synthroid helped relieve the tiredness, but did nothing for the depression, and brain fog. After being on the Armour I began to feel "normal."

Agitrons: I was on Synthroid for over 3 years for Hashimoto's, my TSH test was generally in the low ranges....My face was puffy, my energy low, I slept fully 9 hours plus naps, I was often constipated and had no "sparkle" to my sense of self....I have been on Armour for 1 year. Within 6 weeks everyone commented on how much better I looked, told me I had lost weight (I hadn't). My mental acuity is sharper, I feel more alert. Most significantly for me my face is no longer puffy.

Kari: I took synthroid for 15 years. Within 2 weeks of starting amourthyroid, I went from sleeping 10 hours a day with a nap to sleeping 8 hours with no nap, colors seemed brighter, my mood was happier and more alive, people were not having to finish my sentences because I was forgetting words, I stopped delegating work to others (because now I had the energy to do it myself), I stopped dreading outings because of worry of whether I would have energy or not to attend, the only drawback I can think of is I stopped reading so many books (I have energy for other activities).

    Online at <www.altsupportthyroid.org/dt/dtexp3pr.php> (accessed 2003/09/10).
  • John R: ...I am now able to think in more creative and abstract ways (thinking outside of the box) that was lost for a time [on Synthroid and Cytomel]. Now...Look out world! The brain is back online, and firing on all 8 pistons.

    Online at <www.altsupportthyroid.org/dt/dtexp4pr.php> (accessed 2003/09/10).
