Hypothyroidism and Desiccated Thyroid: Articles by Doctors
Purpose of this compilation
To show that treating hypothyroidism with desiccated thyroid (best known by the brand name Armour) is a successful and safe treatment.
See the other compilations of articles by doctors:
1. Alan R. Gaby, MD: "Thyroid Therapy: Mimicking Mother Nature"
...some hypothyroid patients whose symptoms fail to respond to T4 alone have a rapid and marked improvement when their treatment is changed to an equivalent dose of thyroid extract (such as Armour thyroid).
2. Michael Lam, MD: "Hypothyroidism"
Patients with hypothyroidism show greater improvements in mood and brain function if they receive treatment Armour thyroid rather than Synthroid (thyroxin).
3. John C. Lowe, MA, DC: "drlowe.com Most Recent Q&As"
It's noteworthy that the patients recover with Armour after having failed to improve enough — if at all! — with the use of Synthroid, Levoxyl, or other brands that contain only T4. A small percentage of patients do well with brands that contain only T4. But many years of clinical experience have compelled us to a firm conclusion: Brands containing T4 alone provide most hypothyroid patients with distinctly inferior treatment results.
4. Richard Shames, MD, and Karilee Halo Shames, PhD, RN, HNC: "Stability of Natural Thyroid Drugs vs. Synthetic"
Regarding stability and uniformity of dose, the synthetic medicines do not have a corner on the market in this area. Several times over the years, the Synthroid company has been called to task for nonconformity and nonreliability of dosage strength. More recently, Levoxyl tablets have faced the same charge, and had to be recalled.
...the uniformity of potency....has certainly been a smokescreen for the prescription drug companies to further denigrate the natural products.
5. Gordon Skinner, MD, DSc, FRCPath, FRCOG: "ME and The Thyroid Gland"
...natural thyroid which comes from a pig and of course contains all the hormones of the thyroid gland....is useful particularly with patients that have had the thyroid removed or killed with radiation for being overactive because in these patients they may have lost all their hormones. There's various hormones in the thyroid gland, there's parathyroid, there's calcitonin and there may be things we don't know about, so it makes sense to restore the whole lot.
6. Kenneth N. Woliner, MD, ABP: "Combined T4/T3 Therapy: Placebo or Tomato?"
Armour Thyroid, one of many combination T4/T3 medications has been available for over 100 years. There is no patent protection for Armour Thyroid and there are many competing T4/T3 brands as well as generic versions of Armour available on the market.....There are no sales representatives calling on physicians to prescribe Armour Thyroid. Is it any wonder that combination T4/T3 therapy has fallen out of favor?
